96 Bells ~ (for Elizabethans)

about

The day after the Queen died, I was walking past Derby Cathedral which was chiming its main bell 96 times; one for each year of the Queen's life. I heard the organ there playing an interesting figure and memorised it. The figure provides the key motif for the piece, the tempo of which is 96bpm. Between that walk by the Cathedral and now, as I write this the evening before her funeral to be held tomorrow (19.ix.22), I worked up the piece in tribute and having been absorbed by all the collective emotions of all those paying respects.

A small sample of some William Walton string music I had floating around on my hard drive appears early on (Walton of course wrote music for her Coronation). From thereon the motif I'd heard at the Cathedral provides the main musical material and the rhythm in bars of 7/4, while the chiming bell occurs every sixth beat and, as with the bells rung around Britain that day, it chimes 96 times. The instrumentation comprises of church organ, Rhodes piano, hand-bells, some Mellotron samples; flutes, orchestral percussion and strings.

Things build up to a loud uplifting crescendo, while throughout, there are hints of minimalist music and a nod back to an older track of mine from the second album.
